Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that lightens the natural colour of the teeth. It uses a bleaching agent, usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which passes into the tooth and breaks down the stain molecules that cause discolouration.
Why teeth change colour
Stains build up over time from coffee, tea, red wine, some foods and tobacco. With age, the outer enamel also becomes thinner, so more of the naturally darker dentine underneath shows through. In-chair whitening uses a higher-strength gel applied by the dentist, with the gums protected, and a visible change is often seen after one appointment. Take-home whitening uses custom trays made to fit the teeth with a lower-strength gel, and lightens the teeth more gradually over one to a few weeks. Over-the-counter products contain lower concentrations and tend to give slower, less predictable results.
What whitening can and cannot do
Whitening works on natural teeth only. Fillings, crowns and bonding do not change colour, so they may look darker than the surrounding teeth afterwards. Results vary from person to person and fade gradually, so touch-ups may be needed. Temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation are the most common side effects. Whitening is usually not recommended where there is untreated decay or gum disease, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
