Preventative dentistry aims to stop problems such as tooth decay and gum disease before they start, or to find them early, when treatment is usually simpler. It is the foundation of dental care for adults and children.
Why prevention matters
Decay and gum disease often cause no pain in their early stages. By the time a tooth aches or the gums bleed, the problem may already need more involved treatment. Regular check-ups allow small changes to be found and managed early, and help keep natural teeth for longer.
Check-ups and X-rays
A check-up examines the teeth, gums and the soft tissues of the mouth, including the tongue, cheeks and palate, where ulcers or patches that need attention can be found. Digital X-rays show areas that cannot be seen directly, such as between the teeth and below the gum line. Most people are seen every six to twelve months, and people with a history of decay or gum disease may need to be seen more often.
Professional cleaning
Plaque that is not removed hardens into tartar (calculus), which cannot be removed with a toothbrush. A professional scale and clean removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gum line, and polishing removes some surface stains.

Fluoride and fissure sealants
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to decay. Professional fluoride treatments can add extra protection for people at higher risk. Fissure sealants are thin coatings bonded into the deep grooves of the back teeth, where decay often starts. They are most often used for children’s new adult molars.
