Splints and snoring devices are custom-made appliances worn in the mouth, usually at night. A splint protects the teeth from grinding and clenching. A snoring device holds the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep to help keep the airway open.
Teeth grinding and clenching
Grinding or clenching the teeth is called bruxism. It often happens during sleep, and many people are unaware of it until a partner hears it or a dentist notices the signs. Over time it can wear, flatten and crack teeth and fillings, and it can leave the jaw muscles tired or sore. Stress, sleep problems and certain medicines are among the factors linked with it.
How a splint helps
A splint, also called a night guard or occlusal splint, is a custom-made cover that fits over the upper or lower teeth. It protects the teeth from wear and spreads the biting forces more evenly. For some people it also eases sore jaw muscles. A splint protects the teeth rather than stopping the grinding itself.

Snoring and sleep apnoea
Snoring happens when the soft tissues of the throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway during sleep. Snoring can also be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea, where breathing repeatedly stops or becomes shallow during sleep, which can leave a person very tired during the day. A mandibular advancement splint is worn on the upper and lower teeth and holds the lower jaw slightly forward, which can help keep the airway more open. It needs enough healthy teeth to hold onto, and the bite can change slightly over time with long-term use.
Splints and snoring devices at White Pearl Dental Care
Splints and snoring devices are made at the practice in Blacktown from an iTero digital scan of the teeth. Splints are made in hard acrylic with a soft inner lining, or fully 3D printed by a dental laboratory. Before an oral device is made for sleep apnoea, a sleep study prescribed by a sleep physician, or a recommendation from a sleep physician, is needed.
Health funds
Some health fund extras policies contribute to splints and snoring devices. All major health funds are accepted, with HICAPS claiming on the spot.
