Restorative Dentistry and Extractions

Crown, bridge and filling restorations

Restorative dentistry repairs teeth that are decayed, cracked or worn, and replaces teeth that are missing. The aim is to restore how the teeth work and look, and to keep natural teeth wherever possible. When a tooth cannot be saved, it may need to be removed.

Fillings

A filling repairs a tooth damaged by decay or a small fracture. The damaged part is removed and the tooth is rebuilt, usually with tooth-coloured composite resin. Glass ionomer, which releases fluoride, may be used in some situations, such as near the gum line or in baby teeth.

Root canal treatment

Inside each tooth is the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, often from deep decay or a crack, root canal treatment removes it and cleans and seals the canals so the tooth can be kept. Back teeth often need a crown afterwards to protect them from breaking.

Crowns and bridges

A crown is a cap that covers a tooth that is heavily filled, cracked, worn or has had root canal treatment, restoring its shape and strength. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. Where implants are suitable, an implant-supported bridge can be used instead. See dental implants.

Dentures

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. A full denture replaces all the teeth in a jaw, and a partial denture replaces some teeth and is held in place by the remaining ones.

Extractions

A tooth may need to be removed when it is badly broken or decayed, infected and cannot be saved, or loose from advanced gum disease. Options for replacing the tooth can be discussed beforehand. See also wisdom teeth.

Restorative care at White Pearl Dental Care

Fillings, root canal treatment, crowns, bridges, dentures and extractions are provided at the practice in Blacktown, with extractions done under local anaesthetic. Teeth with calcified (blocked) canals may be referred to an endodontist (a specialist in root canal treatment).

Health funds

Many health fund extras policies contribute to fillings, root canal treatment and extractions, and policies with major dental cover may contribute to crowns, bridges and dentures. All major health funds are accepted, with HICAPS claiming on the spot.
