Invisalign is a brand of clear aligners: thin, removable plastic trays, custom-made to fit the teeth, that straighten teeth gradually. For suitable teenagers and adults, Invisalign can be an alternative to traditional metal braces.
What Invisalign can treat
Invisalign is most often used for crowded teeth, gaps between teeth, and mild to moderate bite problems such as some overbites, underbites and crossbites. Teeth that have moved after earlier orthodontic treatment can often be realigned. Severe bite problems or differences in jaw size may be better treated with fixed braces or specialist orthodontic care.
How clear aligners work
Each aligner in the series is shaped slightly differently from the last. Worn in order, the aligners apply gentle, controlled pressure that moves the teeth in small steps towards the planned position. Aligners are worn for most of the day, usually 20–22 hours, and each set is typically worn for one to two weeks before moving to the next. Because they only work while they are worn, results depend on wearing them as directed.
Invisalign compared with braces
Clear aligners are much less noticeable than metal braces. They can be taken out to eat and to clean the teeth, so there are no food restrictions. Fixed braces work all the time without relying on the wearer, and can be better suited to some complex tooth movements. Many treatments take around 12 to 18 months, although simple cases can be shorter and complex cases longer. Retainers are needed after either treatment to keep the teeth in their new position.
